Stripe closed my account with money in it: the 120-day review and what to do
Updated 2026-10-18. Sources: Stripe's own terms and help pages, linked inline and listed below. Information only, not legal or financial advice.
Short answer: if Stripe closed your account as an unacceptable risk, it typically pauses payouts for 120 days from the first email so it can cover refunds, disputes and chargebacks. At the end of that period it does a formal review and may release all or part of the remaining balance, keep holding it, or cancel the payout. [Stripe: Stripe Unacceptable Risk Policy] You can usually appeal in the Dashboard during that time, and you should start a backup way to get paid now.
What Stripe can do when it closes an account
Under its Unacceptable Risk Policy (last updated 29 July 2026), Stripe lists the actions it can take: pausing charges, pausing payouts, reversing payments back to cardholders, and starting to close the account. [Stripe: Stripe Unacceptable Risk Policy] The Stripe Payments Terms back this up. If a trigger applies, such as excessive disputes, a negative balance, or activity Stripe considers an unacceptable risk, Stripe can delay or cancel payouts, set up a Reserve, suspend processing, and refuse to process transactions or refunds (s.5.3–5.5). The 120-day clock, step by step
- Day 0: the email. Stripe emails the account owner with the category of reason, the actions applied, any relevant deadlines, how to appeal, and information about the 120-day review. [Stripe: Stripe Unacceptable Risk Policy] Your Dashboard also shows a red banner. [Stripe Support: Why was my Stripe account closed?]
- During the 120 days: appeal. In certain cases you can appeal, usually through the Dashboard. A manual review weighs what you send, and if your first appeal fails you may get another chance. [Stripe: Stripe Unacceptable Risk Policy] If you think Stripe misunderstood or miscategorized your business, Stripe points you to the form linked in the closure email. - Refunds and disputes come out first. The pause exists to cover refunds, disputes and chargebacks, so your balance can reach zero by day 120. [Stripe: Stripe Unacceptable Risk Policy]
- After day 120: the formal review. Stripe aims to finish within a reasonable period and emails you the outcome. That can be a full or partial release, a continued hold, or a cancelled payout if the risk will continue or the law requires it. [Stripe: Stripe Unacceptable Risk Policy]
What to put in an appeal
Start by checking the reason category against Stripe's prohibited and restricted businesses list (last updated 22 September 2026). [Stripe: Prohibited and restricted businesses] If your business is genuinely on that list, an appeal is unlikely to change the outcome, so put your effort into a compliant alternative. If it isn't, show why:
- A plain description of what you sell, who buys it, and how and when it's delivered
- Your website's product, pricing, refund, shipping and contact pages
- Business registration, and supplier invoices proving you can deliver
- Fulfillment evidence: a tracking export and average days from payment to delivery
- Refund and dispute numbers for the last 3–6 months, and what you've changed
Keep it to one complete, calm message. Respond to exactly what the email says. Don't send a stack of short follow-ups.
Protect yourself while you wait
- Keep fulfilling and answer disputes. You stay responsible for refunds and disputes even after an account closes. [Stripe Support: Refunds and disputes after closing a Stripe account] Every dispute you lose comes out of the held balance.
- Subscriptions: if the Stripe Payments Terms ended for reasons other than your breach, you have 30 days to ask in writing for saved card details to go to another PCI-DSS Level 1 processor (s.7.2). [Stripe: Stripe Services Agreement]
- Add a different provider, and answer its questions about the closure honestly.
- Don't open another Stripe account. Stripe's terms forbid it for a suspended or terminated user unless Stripe approves. [Stripe: Stripe Services Agreement]

If the final decision goes against you

Frequently asked questions
How long does Stripe hold funds after closing an account?
Under its Unacceptable Risk Policy, Stripe typically pauses payouts for 120 days from the date of the first notice email, then does a formal review of the remaining balance. The review can release some or all of it, keep holding it, or cancel the payout.
Will I get my money back after 120 days?
Not necessarily all of it. Refunds, disputes and chargebacks are paid from the balance first, so it can be smaller or reach zero, and the formal review can continue the hold or cancel the payout if Stripe decides the risk continues or the law requires it.
Can I appeal a Stripe account closure?
Often, yes. Stripe says that in certain circumstances you can appeal, usually through the Dashboard, and a manual review considers the extra information you give. If the first appeal fails you may be able to appeal again.
Can I open a new Stripe account instead?
No. Stripe's terms forbid creating an account for a user Stripe suspended or terminated unless Stripe approves. Use a different provider and be honest about the closure.
