How long does Stripe hold reserve funds? Rolling, fixed and 120-day holds

Short answer: it depends on which hold you're under. For a reserve Stripe puts on your own account, Stripe's terms give no fixed end date. Stripe releases Reserve funds "only if, and to the extent that" it's satisfied the risk has been mitigated, and your Dashboard's Reserve releases report shows the scheduled dates. [Stripe: Stripe Services Agreement] [Stripe Docs: Reserve releases report] If Stripe has restricted or closed your account under its Unacceptable Risk Policy, payouts are typically paused for 120 days from the first notice email, and then there's a formal review. [Stripe: Stripe Unacceptable Risk Policy] A reserve set by a platform you sell through can't last longer than 180 days. [Stripe Docs: Set reserves on your connected accounts]

Which Stripe hold are you on?

Your situationHow long, per Stripe
Reserve on a Stripe account you hold directlyNo fixed date in the terms. The Reserve releases report in your Dashboard shows each scheduled release date and amount. [Stripe Docs: Reserve releases report]
Account restricted or closed as an "unacceptable risk"Payouts typically paused for 120 days from the date of the first email. After that, Stripe does a formal review and may release all or part of the balance, keep holding it, or cancel the payout. [Stripe: Stripe Unacceptable Risk Policy]
Reserve set by a platform or marketplace that uses Stripe ConnectEach hold releases on its scheduled date and can never be more than 180 days after it was created. [Stripe Docs: Set reserves on your connected accounts]
Your very first payout (not a reserve)Stripe typically schedules the first payout to arrive within 7–14 days of your first live payment, depending on industry, country and risk level. [Stripe Docs: Payouts]

Rolling vs fixed reserves

Stripe describes two types of reserve: fixed and rolling. [Stripe Support: Reserves] Its Connect documentation explains the difference: a fixed reserve releases on a set date, and a rolling reserve holds a percentage of each charge and releases it a set number of days after that charge. [Stripe Docs: Set reserves on your connected accounts]

A worked example (ours, not Stripe's): with a 25% rolling reserve for 120 days, a quarter of a sale made on 1 March would be released about 120 days later, a quarter of a sale on 2 March a day after that, and so on. You get a steady trickle back, not one lump sum, and the trickle stops only when the reserve is lifted or expires.

Why the amount you get back can be smaller

Stripe says each amount in the Reserve releases report is scheduled but not guaranteed. Reserved funds can be used before their release date to cover refunds, disputes or a negative balance. [Stripe Docs: Reserve releases report] Reserve balance funds can't be paid out or transferred until the hold period ends. [Stripe Docs: Balances and settlement time] Plan around the smaller number, not the larger one.

Why "120 days" keeps coming up

Card networks typically let cardholders dispute a payment within 120 days, and longer for future events or services. [Stripe Docs: How disputes work] A hold that runs about 120 days past your last sale covers most of that window. Stripe describes its own 120-day payout pause as "in line with industry practice", there to cover potential refunds, disputes and chargebacks. [Stripe: Stripe Unacceptable Risk Policy]

What can actually shorten a reserve

Because release depends on Stripe being satisfied the risk has gone down, the useful move is to address the specific triggers in the Stripe Payments Terms. These include excessive disputes, refunds or reversals, selling things not immediately deliverable without Stripe's consent, a material change in the time between charge and fulfillment, and changing your business model without consent. • Ask what the risk is. Reply in the same thread and ask which concern led to the reserve and what would change it.
  • Send fulfillment proof in one message: tracking export, average days from payment to delivery, unfulfilled paid orders, and supplier invoices.
  • Show your dispute trend. Stripe says dispute activity above 0.75% is treated as excessive across the industry. [Stripe Docs: Measuring disputes] If yours spiked, explain the cause and what you changed.
  • Ask for a review date and put it in your calendar alongside the release dates in the report.
  • Don't open a second Stripe account. Stripe's terms forbid opening an account for a user it suspended or terminated unless Stripe approves. [Stripe: Stripe Services Agreement]

Frequently asked questions

Can Stripe hold my money indefinitely?

Stripe's terms set no fixed release date for a reserve on your own account. Under the Unacceptable Risk Policy, the formal review at the end of the 120-day pause can lead Stripe to keep holding all or part of the balance, or to cancel the payout. The 180-day limit applies only to reserves that a platform sets on its connected accounts.

Where can I see my Stripe reserve release dates?

In the Reserve releases report in your Stripe Dashboard. It appears only if your account holds reserve funds. Stripe updates it daily, and new reserves can take up to a day to show.

Can I keep taking payments during a Stripe reserve?

Stripe's reserves FAQ says reserves don't stop a business from accepting payments. If Stripe has paused charges as well, that's a separate action, which the Unacceptable Risk Policy lists among the steps it can take.

Why is Stripe holding my first payment for 7 to 14 days?

That's usually the standard first payout delay, not a reserve. Stripe says it typically schedules the first payout within 7 to 14 days of your first live payment, depending on industry, country and risk level.
