Shopify Payments payouts paused or on hold: what to do

A Shopify Payments hold can stop payouts while orders keep coming in, which is the worst kind of cash squeeze. Here's what Shopify itself says about holds, reserves and verification pauses.
Hold, reserve, or verification pause?
- Account hold. Shopify reviews accounts throughout their life. Reasons include information requirements, incorrect bank details, product eligibility, an unsupported business type, sanctions, and creditor or legal action. During a hold you can keep using your store but can't receive Shopify Payments payouts until it's resolved. In some cases the store can't take new orders; the admin banner or email says which. - Reserve. A temporary hold on part (sometimes all) of your transactions for a set period. Shopify's own examples use 120 days, such as 10% of each transaction held for 120 days. Reserve terms are sent by email. [Shopify Help Center: Overview of reserves in Shopify Payments]
- Verification pause (EU/UK). Miss a verification deadline and payouts pause until you complete it. A second deadline can pause order acceptance too. For accounts created in or after June 2026, payouts pause until verification, charges pause 30 days after the first order, and payments are refunded 90 days after the first order if still unverified. - Bank ownership verification. If it's incomplete, some payouts may pause until it's resolved. Follow the action in the admin banner. [Shopify Help Center: Verifying ownership of your Shopify Payments bank account]
What triggers a reserve
Shopify lists extended billing cycles (such as annual subscriptions), elevated chargebacks, an increased refund rate, long delivery timelines (pre-orders, custom orders, events) and significant volume surges. How to respond
- Go to Settings > Payments and follow the banner's action first. Only the store owner can see account details. [Shopify Help Center: Shopify Payments account holds]
- Reply directly to Shopify's email. Shopify says providing the requested information and replying to its email is the fastest way to resolve a hold. [Shopify Help Center: Shopify Payments account holds]
- Appeal a reserve within the stated timeframe by replying to the reserve email. Some reserves can't be appealed. If the email lists requirements instead, the reserve is removed automatically once you meet them. [Shopify Help Center: Overview of reserves in Shopify Payments]
- Creditor holds are different. Shopify can't remove them. Only the payment processor can, after it receives a release from your creditor. [Shopify Help Center: Shopify Payments account holds]
Before a reserve expires, Shopify reviews whether to keep, reduce or raise it, and released funds can take several business days to reach a payout. Keep taking orders
- Switch card providers in Settings > Payments. Only one credit card provider can be active at a time. [Shopify Help Center: Configuring third-party payment providers]
- Enable manual payment methods such as bank transfer or cash on delivery. Those orders show as unpaid until you mark them paid. [Shopify Help Center: Manual payment methods]
- Check eligibility if the reason was your business type: Shopify's prohibited list includes regulated products, certain financial services, adult content, unverified health claims, gambling and counterfeit goods, and it varies by country. [Shopify Help Center: Shopify Payments eligibility]
